What would you pay for nostalgia?

What would you pay for nostalgia? Well, it turns out that people will spend quite a bit on it. For example, a rare, sealed copy of Super Mario 64 just sold at auction for an incredible $1.56 million! This auction makes this copy of the video game the most expensive game ever sold. The previous record was set just a week prior when a copy of The Legend of Zelda sold at auction for $870,000.

What makes these pieces from the not-so-distant past so valuable? If you go to your basement and dig out your old copy of Super Mario 64, are you going to be able to sell it for a cool million? No. When collectors buy a piece of their past, they want to make sure they are buying something that is not only authentic but has been taken care of.

It is not enough to have the item to sell when it comes to any memorabilia such as games, comic books, coins, or baseball cards. If you want to get top dollar at auction, the item must be professionally graded and sealed.

The copy of Super Mario 64 that sold was professionally graded and sealed in a plastic container. The fame received a grade of 9.8 out of 10 by Wata Games, a professional video game grading company. The seal quality scale was also rated at an A++, meaning that the seal is in new or very near perfect condition and only displays the slightest factory processing marks. According to Heritage Auctions, the 9.8/A++ rating makes this copy of Super Mario 64 the "highest-graded copy of the single best-selling video game on the Nintendo 64."

As a comparison, the copy of The Legend of Zelda that broke the previous record was rated at 9.0/A.

Having items professionally graded gives the potential buyer a standard scale for comparison without relying on the subjective observations of the person who has a vested interest in selling the object. When a piece is graded, it is sealed in a plastic container and labeled with the grading company's guarantee. If the plastic container is opened, then the grading is no longer valid as the grading company has no way of knowing how the object has been handed.
